RCI to work with Designer T.Y. Lin International to Construct an Iconic Pedestrian Bridge
Under the direction of the City Centre Development Corporation (CCDC), a non-profit development corporation under contract to the Redevelopment Agency of the City of San Diego, RCI will construct the $21,672,531 pedestrian bridge which spans 550 feet across the railroad right-of-way and Harbor Drive in the East Village Section of downtown San Diego. The bridge will connect directly to a third level parking structure adjacent to the new Hilton San Diego Convention Center Hotel. It will provide a safe crossing over heavily traveled Harbor Drive and existing train and trolley tracks, facilitating the completion of the vehicular intersection at Park Boulevard and Harbor Drive. The bridge will improve vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and will complete a 100-year old vision of a Park-to-Bay Link, connecting two important regional assets: Balboa Park and San Diego Bay.

Located next to PETCO Park, home of the San Diego Padres, the bridge will safely connect ballpark visitors and Convention Center guests across Harbor Drive. It will also connect the 2,000-space Port of San Diego parking garage with Park Boulevard. The at-grade crossing will include pedestrian barriers and enhanced safety crossing technologies thus improving traffic circulation and access to and from the waterfront and Barrio Logan. The 550-foot long by 16-foot wide structure is a single pylon suspension bridge structure with stainless steel suspenders. The main deck of the structure is 30 feet high, while the angled pylon extends to a height of 130 feet. In addition to the bridge, an elevator tower and open space areas for the north and south plazas are included in the project scope and will utilize the same overall design scheme. The project incorporates architectural, structural, mechanical, landscaping and miscellaneous civil improvements. Public artwork will be displayed in both pedestrian plazas and on both ends of the bridge.

With the groundbreaking on July 30, 2008, the project will take nearly 15 months to construct. When completed, in October 2009, the stylized bridge will appear to sail into San Diego's skyline as it unites downtown's urban core. Designed to be one of the longest self-anchored pedestrian suspension bridges in the world and will link: Balboa Park and San Diego Bay; reopen Harbor Drive at Park Boulevard; provide a safe pedestrian crossing over Harbor Drive and existing train and trolley tracks; and add public open space and art to downtown San Diego.

We are excited about this opportunity to be a part of San Diego's history. We invite everyone to watch us build the Park Boulevard at Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge.
